Earl Thomas Pitman, 53, Castro Valley, CA
I grew up in Pleasant Hill, California. I played tuba and string bass in the Pleasant Hill High School concert band, jazz band, and orchestra. I started playing bluegrass in 1974 with high school friends Peter and Phil Allen. Two summers later, the three of us loaded up my mom’s ‘58 Ford sedan and went to the first CBA festival in Grass Valley. I still vividly remember Vern Williams’s voice echoing through the pines!
I majored in music in college, but ‘that didn’t hurt my bluegrass none.’ Today I play bluegrass with friends on my ‘94 Herringbone and am saving money for a new bass. I play my tuba in church and in the Ohlone Tuba Ensemble. (Don’t worry, bluegrass and tuba are the oil and water in my life – they don’t mix!)
My wife’s name is Dana, and we have been married for 27 years. We have one son, Jon – an Eagle Scout – who is taking drama courses at Chabot College. I believe real musicians have day jobs, and mine is teaching fifth grade for the Fremont Unified School District.
Praise God that Jesus Christ is my Lord and Savior! I hope that I can serve Him in the Christian Bluegrass Association and have fellowship with others that love Gospel Music!
